Black Smithy Cluster, Mylliem, Meghalaya

Cluster Development Executive:-
Shri T.P. Vijayakumar, Asst. Director I/c, Br. MSME-DI, Shillong.
Location:-
Located 20km away from Shillong in East Khasi Hills District. Spread over 12 villages.
No of Units:-
90 units.
Products Manufactured :-
Spade, Grass Cutting Knives, Axe, Dao, Knife, Jamphai etc.
Employment:-
380 artisans.
Turnover Before the Start of CDP:-
Rs. 24.94 lakhs per year.
Market:-
Local market.

Problems faced by the Cluster:-
 
1. Low income of the artisans.
2. Traditional Technology.
3. Lack of Market Avenue.
4. Lack of Modern design & Product Diversification.
5. Lack of Entrepreneurial Quality.

To bring a turn around this traditional cluster in Meghalaya with an holistic approach under the cluster development programme of Ministry of MSME, a proposal in the form of a diagnostic study was prepared by MSME-Development Institute, Guwahati & the same was submitted to the O/O the DC(MSME) & the cluster development activities were approved by the O/O the DC(MSME), New Delhi & the cluster development activities started in the cluster in the last quarter of the year 2007-08. The fund released for different cluster activities during the year 2007-09 was Rs. 1.55 lakhs. The different activities undertaken in the cluster so far are:
  • Field Visit to NIFFT, Ranchi & ASIA, Jamshedpur from 30-03-08 to 07-04-08; in which 10 artisans undertook the journey. The artisans were benefited by the exposure to the latest technology.
  • One day seminars on SHG formation held on 7th & 15th July ’08-9 SHGs formed.
  • Four seminars on capacity building & market development during April-May ’08.
  • Seven artisans from the Cluster participated in Shillong Trade Fair and products worth Rs. 50,0 n 00/- were sold during the trade fair.
  • CDCC Meeting Held on 18-7-2008.
  • Meeting held on 15-12-08 to elect office bearers of SPV & finalization of name of SPV as Isynroplang Blacksmithy Association with 60 members.
  • Meeting with Asst. Registrar of Societies, Govt. of Meghalaya for registration of SPV on 02-01-2009.
  • Seminar on Formation of Conortia & strengthening of Association held on 19-03-2009
  • Participation in State level Trade Fair organized by KVIC at Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh from 20th to 25th March’09- attended by 10 artisans from the cluster.
  • Participation by 10 members of the cluster at national Level vendor Development Programme organized by Br. MSME-DI, Shillong at Shillong on 13th-14th March’09.
The O/O DC(MSME), New Delhi has been approached with a request for release of Rs. 3.67 lakh as the budget provision for the Cluster Development activities of this cluster for the year 2008-09, and an amount of Rs. 2.52 lakh has been recently sanctioned.
